As China approaches the limits of growth based on a manufacturing-driven economy, its ambition is to transform the current reality of “Made in China” into “Created by China”; China now wants to own its own patents and copyrights, and is no longer statisfied being manufacturing subcontractors for foreign design. In order to achieve the next step up the industrial food chain, the government is pouring capital and resources to develop a creative economy in which information and innovation drive growth.

The International Creative Industries Alliance, ICIA Beijing, was established to lead these significant waves of change and meet these demands. The ICIA is a non-profit organization that aims to kick start China’s creative industries by connecting it with the rest of the world. ICIA’s mission is to set up a platform for local and international creative talents and professionals to explore new genres, develop new business models, create digital content, and exchange information and experiences. ICIA’s vision is not only to contribute to economic growth, but also to improve the quality of life through creativity and innovation.

ICIA is founded by the following institutions: the Chinese Culture Administration Association, the Ministry of Culture; Beijing Creative Centre; Beijing Academy of Science and Technology; the Hong Kong Design Centre; Beijing Industrial Design Promotion Organization; the Z-Park Brand Innovation and Development Association Beijing; the Made In China (UK) Ltd. based in London; the Corporate Design Foudnation in the United States; the Arc-Centre of Excellence for Creative Industries Innovation Australia, Queensland University of Technology; and the Da-Tong Foundation China Desk Creative Industry in the Netherlands. The ICIA, located in the Gehua Tower in the central district of Beijing, will host a series of events to build partnerships, connect global resources, lead industry research projects and promote creative industries in China.

The opening of ICIA is slated for November 9th, 2007 at 5pm at the Gehua Tower, 1st floor, 1 Qinglong Hutong, south side of the North Second Ring Rd, East District. The opening will coincide with the Second China (Beijing) Cultural and Creative Expo sponsored by the Chinese Government.

The ceremony will be opened by Chen Dong, vice minsiter of the Beijing Municipal City Propaganda department, and attended by officials from the Beijing Municipal Cultural and Creative Industries Taskforce, the Chinese Ministry of Culture, Ministry of Information Industry, National Development and Reform Commission, General Administraion of Press and Publication and SARFT. Founding members of the ICIA, scholars and practitioners from the industry will attend the event.
